SSNIT add up for pensions by 25%

Image
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has increased monthly pension payments by an average of 25 percent. The review will see all 234,000 legitimate pensioners on the SSNIT pension payroll as of the end of December 2022 have their monthly pensions increased by a fixed rate of 19 per cent, plus a redistributed flat amount of GH¢73.58. Redistribution is a mechanism applied to the rate (indexation rate) to cushion members on low pensions, in conformity with the solidarity principle of social security. By the increment, the minimum paid pensioner will receive GH¢430.58 while the highest paid pensioner receives GH¢169,725.89. The Director-General of SSNIT, Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang, who announced this at a press conference in Accra today (January 13), said the projected expenditure on pensions only for 2023 will be GHȼ4.3 billion, GHȼ850 million more than last year. He said, “the Trust remains committed to paying all legitimate benefits accurately and timeously.”

About 130 civilians killed by DR Congo rebels – UN

A UN investigation has found that at least 131 people were killed at the end of November in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo at the hands of the M23 rebel group. It says investigations have confirmed the deaths of the civilians in two villages – Kishishe and Bambo – in the Rutsuhuru district of North Kivu province. The UN says the victims were executed in what appears to be a reprisal of the current government offensive. “This violence was carried out as part of a campaign of murders, rapes, kidnappings and looting against two villages in the Rutshuru territory as reprisals for the clashes between the M23” and other groups, it says. The M23 rebels, who have captured several towns near the borders of Rwanda and Uganda this year, have denied they are attacking civilians.

The Koforidua Technical Institute’s boys’ dormitory, located in the Eastern Region’s New Juaben North Municipality, has been completely destroyed by fire. Before National Fire Service workers controlled the blaze and stopped it from spreading to additional rooms, the fire that started on Monday at 11:45 p.m. raged across four rooms. 75 affected students lost everything they owned. One person was still being treated and discharged from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Koforidua after treatment for eight who had minor injuries. Although the cause of the incident is yet unknown, preliminary examinations conducted by the Ghana National Fire Service hint to an electrical issue. The school’s principal, Bernard Forson, pleaded with the public to donate some supplies to the facility. The agency is preparing to host a number of student engagements to educate students on fire management, according to Municipal Fire Commander DO1 Emmanuel Acquaye, who is now on the spot with his troops as part of inves

Ghana already importing water – WRC’s Director of Planning

The Director of Planning at the Water Resources Commission, Dr. Bob Alfa says Ghana is already importing water. Speaking at the Citi TV’s Roundtable Discussion on Galamsey, Mr. Alfa said: “I hear people say all the time that if we don’t take time, we will soon import water. When we say Ghana is importing water, we often look at the physical importation but on the face of it, that is already happening. We are importing labour and tools into our water supply mechanisms.” “Whatever we consume is produced with water and if you don’t develop your water resources, and then you import some country’s products, what you are importing is what they have done as far as their water development is concerned,” he explained. He blamed the issue on the country’s lack of investment in its water resources. “We do not even invest in our water resources, we do not manage our water resources very well.” The Water Resources Commission (WRC) was established by an Act of Parliament (Act 522 of 1996) with the
